Volunteers are the heart of our organization.

 Join us today!

It takes a lot of time and energy to operate an animal shelter!  a_paw_7.gifIf you love animals, we would really appreciate a donation of your time and talents at our Duxbury shelter.  We are lucky to have volunteers who contribute business experience, maintenance and landscaping talents, computer skills, writing and graphics expertise, as well as organizational and administrative abilities.  We are grateful to the volunteers who are willing and able to take pregnant cats and the kittens into their homes and foster them until the animals are ready for adoption.  Our Shelter Volunteers, who as a group care for the cats – twice-a-day, 7 days-a-week, 365 days-a-year – are the core of our organization.  The work these dedicated people do to keep the cats happy, healthy and ready for a new home is truly a labor of love.

President Julie Salamone and Board Member Nancy Cullen enjoy the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at PJ’s Country House in Scituate.

Shelter Volunteers take care of these homeless cats just like they do for their own pets at home.

People typically volunteer with us once-a-week, twice-a-month or once-a-month, and usually donate between 1.5 hours-4 hours each time.

We work not only to keep the cats comfortable and healthy, but also to create a home-like environment for the animals and an appealing atmosphere for potential adopters.  Of course, part of our work is to play and cuddle with the cats!

To be a Shelter Volunteer, you need to:

·      Have a kind and tender heart

·      Be at least 16 years old to work in the Shelter; 13-15   year-olds must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

·      Be able to carry a bucket of hot water.

·      Be able to bend and reach to clean the floors of cages.

·      Be able to carry 10-25 lbs.

·      Have steady, firm -- yet gentle -- hands.

·      Be able to mop a floor with a feline supervisor playfully perched on your shoulders.

a_paw_7.gif Our volunteers really look forward to coming to the shelter and seeing the new cats that have been rescued.  We help neglected or abused cats learn to trust people again.  Everyone is very excited whenever our kitties are placed in a carefully screened new home.

Being a Shelter Volunteer is fun!!

It’s a great way for:

  • Animal lovers to work directly with cats who need love and care

  • High school Juniors and Seniors to fulfill their community service requirement, especially if they’d like to be a Vet Tech or a Veterinarian someday

  • Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to spend quality time with a young teen who loves animals

Volunteers enjoy getting together with other volunteers at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

Greeting people and doggies is just one of many activities for volunteers at Standish’s annual “Benefit Walk for Animals –DoggiePawLooza”, held in late September at DCR Wompatuck State Park in Hingham.  Proceeds benefit our reduced cost Spay/Neuter Program as well as the Shelter.

  • People who have stressful jobs to enjoy  a peaceful activity; even our most persnickety cats are happy to see you

  • Someone who isn’t able to keep a cat at home right now to play with and care for cats a few hours-a-month

Sometimes, people are concerned that if they become a Shelter Volunteer, they’ll “want to take them all home with me.”  There is no need to worry – the cats living in our shelter will remain safe, warm and dry (and very spoiled!) until we can find a ‘forever home’ for them.  So, your favorites (and each volunteer has at least one) will be here when you come for your next shift, unless they are adopted into a good home.

Shelter Volunteers take a break at our annual “Photos with Santa” fund-raising event, sponsored by PetSmart in Plymouth.

Volunteers are happy to give their time to these wonderful cats, and honestly,  each volunteer gets back so much more than she or he gives . . .

Volunteers share "cat stories" at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.

Play time is a big part of a volunteer's contribution to the well being of the shelter cats.
